Met Gala 2017: A Red Carpet Round-up
The 2017 Met Gala took place earlier this week and, as with most red carpet events, we saw a very mixed bag of looks.
The theme this year was in honour of the ‘Rei Kawakubo / Comme de Garcons: Art of the In-between’ opening. The Japanese Comme de Garcons founder, Rei Kawakubo, is known for pushing the limits of body shape and redefining the perception of clothes (think bulging silhouettes, asymmetric shapes and experimental cut-outs accompanied with plenty of black and red fabrics and patterns) and so we were extremely excited to see what the stars came up with.
In classic red (or cream and blue in this case) carpet style, some celebs took the avant-garde theme and showcased some outlandish looks, while some played it safe. Below, I’ve rounded up some of the highlights from this year’s Met Gala:
Rihanna
Love it or loathe it, the Queen of pop gets the theme spot-on every year; in 2015 she took the spotlight with her huge canary yellow Guo Pei couture gown, while this year she rocked up in a Comme de Garcons floral, architectural dress, that showcased the theme perfectly.
Rita Ora
Personally, this is my favourite look from this year’s event as the look ties in perfectly with the theme while still looking stunning and elegant. The singer played on Rei Kawakubo’s signature colour, red, with her couture Marchesa dress and used her hair – platinum blonde and structural – as an accessory to steal the show with (apparently it took three days to create!)
Zendaya
Although not completely on-theme, Zendaya looked as glamorous as ever in her Dolce & Gabbana tropical print ball gown, complemented with a bright orange lip and gorgeous hair.
Bella Hadid made a statement in her glitzy Alexander Wang bodysuit, working the carpet solo while ex The Weeknd and Selena Gomez made their red carpet debut – true girl-power.
Helen Lasichanh
It wouldn’t be a Met Gala 2017 round up without mentioning the most outlandish look of them all; Pharrel’s wife, Helen Lasichanh, in a Comme de Garcons jumpsuit. Although the look is possibly the most on-theme of them all, it isn’t one we see ourselves replicating any time soon. Since the event itself on May 1st, Helen’s look has been adapted into meme after meme – and we wouldn’t expect anything less from the creative users of the internet.
Below are some more of this year’s iconic looks from the 2017 Met Gala:
Finally, it would be crazy not to dedicate a special mention to the hilarious bathroom get-together that we all wish we were a part of. Best mirror selfie ever? We think so.
