All you need to know about last night’s Met Gala

Met Gala 2016.001

Hollywood hosts the Oscars each winter, but every fashion-focused female knows the real glamour doesn’t arrive until spring with the annual Costume Institute Gala at the Metropolitan Museum of Art – aka The Met Gala.

Always a fantasia of fabulous dresses, this elegant occasion never fails to provide us with subject for conversation throughout the day here at Avant, and we’re slightly smug as we can technically class our celebrity stalk-a-thon as work.

So what is it?

Well officially, it’s a benefit; a black-tie extravaganza held to raise money for the Costume Institute or the fashion department, and signals the opening of its annual show. Queen of Fashion, Anna Wintour, chairs the Gala. To help her host the event Jonathan Ive, chief design officer at Apple, Taylor Swift and Idris Elba were called upon.

But, unofficially, it’s quite simply one of the most fabulously, glossy events on the calendar. It provides a who’s who of hot celebrities and designers, making it well worth the year-long wait.

And this year’s event was no exception. The red carpet brought hundreds of the world’s most well-known stars to New York, who turned out a lineup of breathtaking gowns in accordance with this year’s theme: Manus x Machina: Fashion in an Age of Technology.
